Your Guide to WBCS Preliminary Exams

The following are a must read if you are preparing for the Prelims. This is as good as any WBCS guide. Even if you take up WBCScoaching these books are an absolute must. So read on:

General English – Go through ‘General English’ by S.P. Bakshi (Arihant Publication) thoroughly. Once you are through pick up P.K. De Sarkar for English Comprehension. Besides we recommend you read through NCERT English Grammar course books prescribed for classes VI to XII.

Geography – Read through each and every geography book recommended by NCERT for Classes VI to XII. As far as details on West Bengals’ geography are concerned you can pick up books prescribed for Bengali medium schools.

 Indian Polity and Economy – Indian Polity by Laxmikanth is an absolute must. Indian Economy by Ramesh Sigh is highly recommended.

Indian History and The Indian National Movement – examiners lay a great deal of emphasis on how well you understand related concepts. For basics “Bharoter Itihass” by Dr.Atul Chandra Roy is a must read. Later on reading History books by Tulsi Publications may help. You can also go through India’s Struggle for Freedom by Bipin Chandra.

General Science – you have to go through each and every NCERT prescribed book for CBSE schools from Classes VI to XII.


Current Affairs -   Your WBCS Guide will keep you updated with tutorials with regard to current affairs, both national and international. Meanwhile devour newspapers and read magazines like the Pratiyogita Darpan regularly.
